The 1988 American romantic drama directed by Philip Kaufman, co-written with Jean-Claude Carrière, is an adaptation of Milan Kundera's novel of the same name. The film follows the life of neurosurgeon Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis) in Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring of 1968 and the subsequent Warsaw Pact invasion. Tomas leads a promiscuous lifestyle, maintaining a relationship with artist Sabina (Lena Olin), but unexpectedly marries young waitress Tereza (Juliette Binoche), who seeks spiritual intimacy and stability. Their marriage is complicated by political events: after the Soviet invasion, Tereza becomes a photojournalist documenting protests, and later emigrates with Tomas to Switzerland. However, homesickness drives her back to Czechoslovakia, followed by Tomas despite the risk of repression. As a result, he loses his medical license and is forced to work as a window washer. Their life becomes increasingly modest but filled with inner meaning. Meanwhile, Sabina continues her independent life, rejecting attachments and ideals. The film explores themes of love, freedom, identity, and political repression, contrasting the lightness of being with the weight of moral choices. The cast also includes Derek de Lint, Erland Josephson, and Stellan Skarsgård. Sven Nykvist's cinematography highlights the contrast between intimate moments and large-scale historical events. The soundtrack features compositions by Leoš Janáček and Czech folk songs. Despite criticism from Kundera for deviating from the spirit of the original, the film received critical acclaim, was nominated for two Academy Awards, and was included in the American Film Institute's list of the 100 most passionate films.
