The 1982 British-Indian biographical drama directed by Richard Attenborough and written by John Briley portrays the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's nonviolent independence movement against British colonial rule. The film opens with a pivotal incident in 1893 South Africa, where young lawyer Gandhi (Ben Kingsley) is ejected from a first-class train compartment reserved for whites, an event that ignites his commitment to civil rights. Returning to India, Gandhi becomes the face of the struggle for independence, advocating for nonviolent civil disobedience and organizing significant events like the Salt March. His philosophy of ahimsa (nonviolence) faces brutal opposition from British authorities, including the massacre at Amritsar.
