The Banker

An American drama film based on true events, released in 2020, it tells the story of two African-American entrepreneurs, Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), who, in the 1950s and 1960s, strive to overcome racial barriers in the real estate and banking industries. Facing systemic racism that hinders their ability to conduct business directly, they enlist a white man, Matt Steiner (Nicholas Hoult), to officially represent their company, while they pose as janitor and chauffeur. This strategy leads them to significant success in Los Angeles, acquiring and managing properties, and facilitating the integration of previously segregated neighborhoods. Inspired by this achievement, Bernard sets his sights on purchasing a bank in his hometown in Texas to provide loans to black residents who had been historically denied such opportunities due to discriminatory practices. Their activities, however, draw the attention of local authorities and banking officials, leading to investigations, legal challenges, and a test of their resolve. The film explores themes of racial inequality, entrepreneurial spirit, and the fight for equal rights, highlighting the importance of perseverance and strategic planning in overcoming societal obstacles.
