A Dangerous Method

The 2011 British-Canadian-German historical drama, directed by David Cronenberg and written by Christopher Hampton, is based on Hampton's play "The Talking Cure," itself adapted from John Kerr's book "A Most Dangerous Method." The film delves into the early development of psychoanalysis and the intricate relationships between Carl Gustav Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and patient Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley). Set in 1904, Spielrein, suffering from hysteria, is admitted to the Burghölzli psychiatric clinic in Zurich, where Jung employs experimental treatment involving talk therapy and dream analysis. A profound emotional and physical bond forms between doctor and patient, complicated by Jung's professional ethics and his marriage to Emma (Sarah Gadon). The arrival of the unstable yet charismatic psychoanalyst Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel) challenges Jung's moral convictions. As the narrative progresses, tensions arise between Jung and Freud due to differing psychoanalytic approaches and personal conflicts, especially after Spielrein becomes Freud's protégé. The film concludes with the tragic fates of the characters: Gross dies of starvation in 1920, Freud succumbs to cancer in 1939, Spielrein and her daughters are executed by the Nazis in 1942, and Jung experiences a nervous breakdown before becoming a leading psychologist, dying in 1961. The film received positive critical acclaim, particularly for its performances and direction, and was featured at the 68th Venice Film Festival.
