An American psychological drama released in 2011, directed by Tony Kaye and written by Carl Lund. The film follows Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody), a substitute English teacher who takes on a one-month assignment at a troubled high school where students exhibit low academic performance and aggressive behavior. Confronted with hostility and apathy from both students and administration, Henry strives to remain detached but gradually becomes involved in the lives of those around him. He becomes a mentor to Meredith (Betty Kaye), a talented yet insecure student suffering from bullying and lack of understanding from her father. Simultaneously, Henry encounters Erica (Sami Gayle), an underage prostitute whom he rescues from an abusive client and offers shelter in his home. As the narrative unfolds, Henry confronts his own inner demons related to a tragic past and a painful family history. The film explores themes of alienation, the purpose of education, and human connection amidst personal and systemic crises.
