Bernie

The 2011 American biographical black comedy directed by Richard Linklater is based on the true story detailed in Skip Hollandsworth's article "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas". Set in the small town of Carthage, Texas, the film follows Bernhardt "Bernie" Tiede (Jack Black), a beloved assistant mortician known for his kindness, community involvement, and special attention to elderly widows. Bernie forms a close friendship with the wealthy and widely disliked widow Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine). Over time, Marjorie becomes increasingly controlling and demanding, leading Bernie to emotional exhaustion. In November 1996, after a heated argument, Bernie kills Marjorie and hides her body in a freezer. For several months, he continues to live as if nothing happened, using her funds for charitable acts and maintaining his standing in the community. When Marjorie's body is eventually discovered, Bernie is arrested, and despite his confession, many townspeople continue to support him, believing his actions were justified. The film blends documentary-style storytelling with dramatized scenes, including interviews with actual Carthage residents, adding authenticity and depth to the narrative.
