The 2011 American Southern Gothic crime film directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1993 play by Tracy Letts, follows 22-year-old drug dealer Chris Smith (Emile Hirsch) in West Dallas. After his mother Adele (Julia Adams) steals his cocaine, leaving him indebted to dangerous dealer Digger Soames (Marc Macaulay), Chris devises a plan with his father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church) and stepmother Sharla (Gina Gershon) to murder Adele and collect her $50,000 life insurance policy, which names his younger sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as the sole beneficiary. They hire "Killer" Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a police detective who moonlights as a contract killer. Unable to pay Joe's $25,000 upfront fee, they offer Dottie's virginity as a retainer. As the plan unfolds, betrayal and violence escalate: Sharla is unfaithful to Ansel, Joe exerts control over Dottie, and the murder plot spirals into chaos. In the film's climax, Dottie, enraged by the revelations and claiming to be pregnant by Joe, shoots him. The film ends ambiguously, leaving the fate of the characters uncertain. "Killer Joe" was critically acclaimed for its performances, particularly McConaughey's, and was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
