The 2003 American black comedy directed by Terry Zwigoff, written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, follows Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton), an alcoholic and petty criminal who, along with his partner Marcus (Tony Cox), annually takes on the role of Santa Claus and his elf in shopping malls to rob them on Christmas Eve. Willie is a vulgar, cynical, and broken man whose life revolves around drinking, casual encounters, and crime. Their scheme is disrupted when Willie befriends a naive and lonely boy named Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), who genuinely believes Willie is the real Santa. This unexpected friendship begins to transform Willie from within. Complicating matters are mall security chief Gin Slagel (Bernie Mac), who grows suspicious of Willie, and bartender Sue (Lauren Graham), who becomes romantically involved with him. The film blends crude humor, satire of Christmas traditions, and elements of drama, exploring themes of loneliness, redemption, and human kindness. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film was a commercial success and has since gained a cult following among fans of unconventional holiday stories.
