Black comedy and crime mix in this American film of 2017. George Clooney directed it and shares the writing credit with the Coen brothers and Grant Heslov. Set in 1959, the story unfolds in the idyllic suburban community of Suburbicon. Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) lives with his wife Rose and their son Nicky. Their peaceful life is shattered when two intruders break into their home, leading to Rose's death from a chloroform overdose. Rose's identical twin sister, Margaret (Julianne Moore), moves in to help but soon assumes Rose's identity and begins a relationship with Gardner. It is revealed that Gardner orchestrated the home invasion to murder Rose and collect on her life insurance policy. Meanwhile, the arrival of the African-American Mayers family in the neighborhood incites racial tensions among the white residents, diverting attention from Gardner's crimes. Insurance investigator Bud Cooper (Oscar Isaac) suspects foul play and attempts to blackmail Gardner and Margaret, but Margaret poisons him, and Gardner finishes him off. As their plan unravels, Margaret tries to poison Nicky, but is killed by one of the original intruders, who also kills Uncle Mitch before being shot. Gardner returns home, finds the aftermath, and offers Nicky a choice to flee with him, but unknowingly consumes the poisoned sandwich meant for his son and dies. The film concludes with Nicky playing baseball with Andy, the son of the Mayers family, symbolizing a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Despite its ambitious themes, the film received mixed reviews and was a box office failure, grossing $12.8 million against a $25 million budget.
