Made in Abyss

The 2017 Japanese animated television series in the dark fantasy genre, produced by Kinema Citrus and directed by Masayuki Kojima, is based on the manga of the same name by Akihito Tsukushi. The story is set in the city of Orth, which borders a massive abyss filled with ancient relics and mysterious creatures. The protagonist, an orphaned girl named Riko (voiced by Miyu Tomita), aspires to become a cave raider like her mother Lyza (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto), who disappeared deep within the abyss. During an expedition, Riko encounters a mechanical boy named Reg (voiced by Mariya Ise), who suffers from amnesia and possesses unique abilities. Believing her mother is still alive at the bottom of the abyss, Riko embarks on a perilous journey with Reg, descending through the abyss's layers and facing both physical and psychological challenges, including the abyss's curse that intensifies with depth. Along their journey, they meet various characters, such as the enigmatic Nanachi (voiced by Shiori Izawa), who provides insight into the abyss's dangers. The series is notable for its contrasting atmosphere: a visually stunning and detailed world juxtaposed with dark and emotionally intense themes that explore the limits of human endurance and morality. The musical score, composed by Kevin Penkin, enhances the series' emotional depth. The first season comprises 13 episodes, covering the first three volumes of the manga.
