A 1969 American comedy-drama film that tells the story of Natalie Miller (Patty Duke), a young woman from Brooklyn who has considered herself unattractive since childhood due to a slight overbite and a somewhat large nose. Her mother (Nancy Marchand) is convinced that she will grow up to be beautiful, but Natalie does not share this belief, especially when compared to her best friend Betty (Deborah Winters), a popular blonde cheerleader. After a series of personal disappointments and failed attempts to meet societal expectations, Natalie decides to leave her parents' home and move to Greenwich Village to find herself and gain independence. She rents an apartment from the eccentric Miss Dennison (Elsa Lanchester) and takes a job as a waitress at a local café. Soon, Natalie meets David Harris (James Farentino), an aspiring artist, and they develop a romantic relationship. However, she later discovers that David is married, which becomes a significant challenge for her. The film is notable for featuring Al Pacino's film debut as Tony. The musical score was composed by Henry Mancini. Patty Duke received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her portrayal of Natalie.
