On the Waterfront

The 1954 American crime drama film, directed by Elia Kazan, follows Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando), a former boxer working as a longshoreman on the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. The docks are controlled by a corrupt union led by Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb), who uses violence and intimidation to maintain power over the workers. Terry, complicit in this corrupt system, witnesses the union-orchestrated murder of worker Joey Doyle, aimed at preventing him from testifying to the authorities. Wracked with guilt, Terry becomes close to Joey's sister, Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), who urges him to stand up against the corruption. Father Barry (Karl Malden), a local priest, also encourages the workers to fight for justice. Influenced by Edie and Father Barry, Terry decides to testify against Johnny Friendly and his mob before a crime commission. This decision leads to a rift between Terry and his brother Charley (Rod Steiger), who is Friendly's right-hand man. After Charley's tragic death, a furious Terry confronts Friendly, culminating in a climactic showdown on the docks. The film received critical acclaim, earning twelve Academy Award nominations and winning eight, including Best Picture, Best Director for Kazan, and Best Actor for Brando. It is also noted for Leonard Bernstein's musical score and is regarded as one of the greatest films in cinematic history.
