The 1999 American crime thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker follows private investigator Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage), who is hired by the wealthy widow Mrs. Christian (Myra Carter) to determine the authenticity of an 8mm film found in her late husband's safe, which appears to depict the real murder of a young woman. Initially believing it to be staged, Welles's investigation leads him into the underground world of illegal pornography. In Los Angeles, he meets Max California (Joaquin Phoenix), a sex shop employee who assists him in navigating the industry. Their search uncovers connections to Eddie Poole (James Gandolfini), a film producer, and Dino Velvet (Peter Stormare), a director involved in creating such content. The case intensifies when it's revealed that Mrs. Christian's attorney, Daniel Longdale (Anthony Heald), is also implicated. Following a series of tragic events, including Max's death and Mrs. Christian's suicide, Welles takes justice into his own hands, killing Eddie Poole, burning the cabin where the films were made, and confronting "Machine" (Chris Bauer), the masked man from the film, whom he also kills after a struggle. The movie delves into the dark aspects of human nature, moral dilemmas, and the fine line between justice and vengeance.
