The 1998 American political thriller directed by Tony Scott and written by David Marconi follows Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a successful labor lawyer in Washington, D.C., whose life is turned upside down after a chance encounter with former college friend Daniel Zavitz (Jason Lee). Zavitz, who has witnessed the assassination of Congressman Phillip Hammersley (Jason Robards) orchestrated by NSA Deputy Director Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight), passes incriminating evidence to Dean without his knowledge. Unaware of the situation, Dean becomes the target of corrupt NSA agents who employ advanced surveillance technologies, including satellite tracking and wiretapping, to destroy his reputation and recover the evidence. Stripped of his job, finances, and the trust of his loved ones, Dean seeks help from former NSA analyst Edward "Brill" Lyle (Gene Hackman), who aids him in exposing the conspiracy and clearing his name. The film also features Lisa Bonet (Rachel Banks), Regina King (Carla Dean), Jack Black (Fiedler), Seth Green (Shelby), Loren Dean (Hicks), Barry Pepper (Pratt), and Jamie Kennedy (Jamie Williams). "Enemy of the State" was acclaimed for its fast-paced narrative, timely exploration of privacy and surveillance issues, and strong performances, particularly highlighting the tension and paranoia associated with government overreach.
