The 1969 American musical Western film directed by Joshua Logan is based on the 1951 Broadway musical of the same name. Adapted by Paddy Chayefsky with music by Frederick Loewe, the story is set during the California Gold Rush and follows prospector Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin), who discovers gold at the burial site of a deceased man. He takes in the surviving brother, whom he names Pardner (Clint Eastwood). Together, they establish a mining camp called "No Name City," which rapidly grows into a bustling settlement filled with gambling, drinking, and a lack of female companionship. The dynamic shifts with the arrival of Mormon Jacob Woodling (Harve Presnell) and his two wives, one of whom, Elizabeth (Jean Seberg), becomes the focus of both Ben and Pardner's affections. An arrangement is made for Elizabeth to be married to both men, leading to a complex love triangle. The film blends elements of comedy, drama, and musical, exploring themes of friendship, love, and greed. Filming took place in Oregon and California, as well as at Paramount Studios. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film achieved commercial success, grossing $31.6 million against a $20 million budget, and ranked seventh in U.S. box office earnings for 1969.
