The 2005 British-American animated film directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson is a gothic fairy tale presented through stop-motion animation. Set in a fictional Victorian village, the story follows shy young man Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp), who is arranged to marry Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson) to unite their families. While practicing his wedding vows in the forest, Victor inadvertently places the ring on what he believes is a twig, which turns out to be the finger of a deceased bride named Emily (Helena Bonham Carter). Emily rises from the grave, believing Victor to be her husband, and takes him to the Land of the Dead, a vibrant and lively realm contrasting with the somber world of the living. As Victor learns about Emily's tragic past—murdered during a secret elopement by her fiancé seeking her dowry—he grapples with his feelings and responsibilities. Meanwhile, Victoria faces the threat of being married off to the sinister Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant), who is revealed to be Emily's murderer. In the climax, Victor agrees to die to marry Emily, but she, recognizing his true love for Victoria, releases him. Barkis meets his end, and Emily finds peace. The film is noted for its unique visual style, dark aesthetic, and Danny Elfman's musical score, blending romance, comedy, and horror elements.
