Paintball

A tactical team-based game simulating combat using markers that shoot paint-filled pellets. It originated in the USA in 1981, when three friends — Bob Gurnsey, Charles Gaines, and Hayes Noel — organized the first game in New Hampshire, using markers originally designed for marking trees. Paintball developed as an alternative to extreme sports and tactical simulations and quickly spread worldwide, becoming both a recreational activity and a professional sport. The game involves protective masks, air or CO₂-powered markers, and non-toxic paintballs that burst on impact. There are various formats: speedball (competitive tournaments played on inflatable bunkered fields), woodsball (games in forested or natural terrain), scenario paintball (reenactments of historical or fictional battles), and milsim (military simulation with realism-focused gear and rules). Paintball demands strategic thinking, team coordination, physical endurance, and fast reflexes. International championships are held, with prominent organizations like the NXL (National Xball League) and the Millennium Series. The game is widely played in clubs, corporate events, military training exercises, and youth culture as a form of active recreation and team bonding. Paintball has influenced the development of airsoft and other military-themed games and is often featured in action films and video games as part of combat-based entertainment culture.
