The 1971 American psychological thriller, marking Clint Eastwood's directorial debut, follows radio disc jockey Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood), who works at KRML in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Each night, he receives calls from a mysterious listener requesting the jazz standard "Misty." One evening, he meets a woman named Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter) at a bar, who turns out to be the persistent caller. Their brief affair escalates into Evelyn's obsessive and erratic behavior, as she begins to stalk Dave, intrude into his personal and professional life, and threaten his ex-girlfriend Tobie Williams (Donna Mills). The situation intensifies when Evelyn attempts suicide and, after being released from a psychiatric hospital, continues to terrorize Dave, leading to tragic consequences. The film explores themes of obsession, mental illness, and the dangers of casual relationships. Filming took place in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey, including scenes at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The musical score was composed by Dee Barton. The film received positive critical acclaim and was a commercial success, with Jessica Walter earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama.
