Roger & Me

A 1989 American documentary film directed by Michael Moore in his directorial debut, examines the impact of General Motors' decision to close several auto plants in Moore's hometown of Flint, Michigan. These closures reduced GM's workforce in the area from 80,000 in 1978 to about 50,000 by 1992. The film follows Moore's attempts to confront GM CEO Roger B. Smith to discuss the effects of these closures on the local community. Throughout the documentary, Moore portrays how the mass layoffs have led to increased unemployment, crime, and poverty among Flint residents. The film combines interviews with locals, archival footage, and satirical commentary to highlight the socio-economic issues resulting from the corporation's decisions. "Roger & Me" received critical acclaim and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2013 for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
