A 1973 American biographical crime film directed by Sidney Lumet. The plot is based on the true story of Frank Serpico (Al Pacino), a New York City police officer who, during his eleven years of service, encountered deeply entrenched corruption within the department. Joining the force in 1959, Serpico quickly realizes that many of his colleagues are involved in taking bribes and other illegal activities. Refusing to participate in these corrupt schemes, he becomes an outcast among his peers and faces constant pressure and threats. Despite numerous attempts to report the misconduct to his superiors, his efforts are ignored, leading him to decide to go to the press. A publication in "The New York Times" sparks public outcry and results in the formation of the Knapp Commission to investigate police corruption. During one assignment, Serpico is shot in the face under circumstances that raise suspicions of betrayal by his colleagues. After recovering, he testifies before the commission and, in 1972, leaves the force, disillusioned with the system. The film received critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over $29 million on a $3 million budget. Al Pacino was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won the Golden Globe in the same category. The screenplay, written by Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler, was also nominated for an Oscar and won the Writers Guild of America Award. The film's score was composed by Mikis Theodorakis. Its realistic portrayal of police work and corruption made the film iconic, and Frank Serpico's character became a symbol of integrity and resistance against systemic corruption.
