Shōgun

A historical novel published in 1975 by British author James Clavell, and the first book in his "Asian Saga" series. Set in the early 17th century, the story follows John Blackthorne, an English navigator who is shipwrecked off the coast of Japan. Immersed in an unfamiliar culture, he learns the language, customs, and becomes entangled in the political intrigues of feudal Japan. Central to Blackthorne’s fate is Lord Toranaga, an ambitious daimyo determined to become shōgun, the supreme military ruler of Japan. Through Blackthorne’s interactions with Toranaga and the translator Mariko, Clavell explores themes of power, loyalty, honor, and cultural conflict. The novel is inspired by real historical events and figures, particularly the English navigator William Adams, who served as the basis for Blackthorne’s character.
