Japanese studio Project Soul, a division of Namco Bandai Games, released Soulcalibur IV in 2008 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This is the fourth main installment in the famous weapon-based fighting game series, continuing the conflict between the legendary swords Soul Edge and SoulCalibur. The game brings back many iconic characters such as Siegfried, Nightmare, Ivy, and Mitsurugi, while introducing new fighters, including guest characters from the Star Wars universe—Darth Vader, Yoda, and Galen Marek (Starkiller). A major new feature is the Armor Destruction system, which allows players to break pieces of an opponent’s armor through powerful attacks, affecting their defense. Additionally, for the first time in the series, a fully-fledged online multiplayer mode was introduced, enabling players to battle each other over the internet. The game received high praise for its refined combat mechanics, detailed graphics, and diverse roster, though some criticism was directed at balance issues and the simplification of certain gameplay elements.
