Stars and Bars​

The 1988 American comedy directed by Pat O'Connor, based on William Boyd's novel and screenplay, follows British art expert Henderson Dores (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he travels from New York to Georgia to acquire a rare Renoir painting from eccentric Southerner Loomis Gage (Harry Dean Stanton). Along the way, Henderson encounters the quirky Gage family, including Freeborn (Maury Chaykin), Beckman (Matthew Cowles), and Shanda (Deirdre O'Connell), as well as other colorful characters like computer saleswoman Irene Stein (Joan Cusack), preacher T.J. Cardew (Spalding Gray), and photojournalist Bryant (Martha Plimpton). His journey devolves into a series of absurd situations, featuring scenes in a hotel with canoes and a chase through New York City streets. The film satirizes cultural clashes between the reserved Brit and expressive Americans, highlighting stereotypes and the absurdity of cross-cultural misunderstandings. Despite a star-studded cast including Laurie Metcalf, Keith David, and David Strathairn, the film received mixed reviews, with critics noting its inconsistent tone and unsuccessful blend of comedy and farce.​
