A 1980 American superhero film directed by Richard Lester, serving as a sequel to the 1978 film "Superman." The film stars Christopher Reeve as Superman/Clark Kent, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Terence Stamp as General Zod, Sarah Douglas as Ursa, Jack O'Halloran as Non, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. The story begins with Superman thwarting a disaster involving a hydrogen bomb sent into space. The explosion inadvertently releases three Kryptonian criminals — General Zod, Ursa, and Non — who were previously imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. Empowered by Earth's yellow sun, they gain superhuman abilities and set out to conquer the planet. Meanwhile, Clark Kent and Lois Lane are on an assignment at Niagara Falls. Lois starts suspecting that Clark and Superman are the same person. To test her theory, she throws herself into the river, but Clark discreetly saves her without revealing his identity. Later, upon accidentally witnessing Clark place his hand into a fire without harm, Lois confirms her suspicions. Clark confesses his secret to her and decides to relinquish his superpowers to live a normal life with Lois. He travels to the Fortress of Solitude, where he uses a crystal chamber to strip himself of his abilities. During this period, General Zod and his cohorts arrive on Earth, causing chaos and destruction. They force the President of the United States to announce the nation's surrender. Lex Luthor, having escaped from prison, offers his assistance to Zod in capturing Superman in exchange for control over Australia. Upon learning of the events, Clark realizes his mistake in giving up his powers. He returns to the Fortress of Solitude and discovers a remaining crystal that enables him to restore his abilities. Superman confronts the Kryptonian villains in Metropolis. Realizing that he cannot defeat them in open combat without endangering civilians, he lures them to the Fortress of Solitude. There, using the Fortress's technology, he depowers Zod, Ursa, and Non, rendering them mortal. In the film's conclusion, Superman delivers Lex Luthor back to prison and repairs the damage caused by the villains.
