The Bonfire of the Vanities

The 1990 American satirical black comedy, directed by Brian De Palma, is based on Tom Wolfe's 1987 bestseller of the same name. The film follows Sherman McCoy (Tom Hanks), a successful Wall Street bond trader who enjoys a luxurious lifestyle and engages in an affair with Maria Ruskin (Melanie Griffith), the young wife of an elderly millionaire. One night, returning from the airport, Sherman and Maria take a wrong turn and end up in the South Bronx. Sherman finds himself at the center of a scandal: his marriage to Judy McCoy (Kim Cattrall) falls apart, he loses his job, and his life descends into chaos. The trial unfolds under intense public and media scrutiny. Judge Leonard White (Morgan Freeman) demonstrates independence despite pressure from the public and politicians. In the film's climax, Sherman decides to reveal the truth by using an illegally obtained audio recording in which Maria admits that she was driving at the time of the accident. This leads to his acquittal but raises questions about morality, justice, and societal manipulation. The film critiques the superficiality and hypocrisy of New York's high society and illustrates how easily public opinion can be manipulated by the media and politicians.
