A memoir and self‑help work by American (born in Czechoslovakia) psychologist and Holocaust survivor Edith Eva Eger, first released in 2017, in which the author not only recounts her harrowing experience at Auschwitz but also builds on it to present her philosophy of freedom of choice and inner strength. In one expansive paragraph Eger narrates how, at age 16, she was deported to a concentration camp, forced to dance for survival in front of Mengele, then rescued and confronted with a choice: live in the past or find freedom by choosing how to respond each day. She then describes emigrating to the U.S., earning a PhD, becoming a therapist, and helping thousands – including veterans, trauma survivors, and people dealing with anorexia, PTSD, grief, etc. Through numerous case studies and personal anecdotes she illustrates how to transform psychological “prisons” of negative beliefs and pain into resources for growth, teaching readers to face the past, make deliberate choices, forgive themselves, and thereby gain freedom and purpose.
