The Covenant

A 2023 American action drama film directed by Guy Ritchie, who also co-wrote and produced it. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. The plot centers on U.S. Army Master Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal), serving in Afghanistan. During one operation, his unit is ambushed, resulting in the death of their interpreter. To fill the vacancy, Kinley hires Ahmed Abdullah (Dar Salim), a steadfast and determined interpreter with a complex reputation. Ahmed accepts the job for financial reasons but later reveals personal motives: his son was killed by the Taliban for refusing to cooperate with them. Throughout their missions, Ahmed repeatedly saves Kinley's and his soldiers' lives, earning the master's respect and trust. During one mission, their squad is ambushed again, and Kinley is severely wounded. Risking his own life, Ahmed drags the injured Kinley through mountains and deserts, evading pursuing Taliban forces, to bring him to safety. Upon returning to the U.S., Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family have not received the promised evacuation visas and are in mortal danger. Driven by a sense of duty and gratitude, Kinley decides to return to Afghanistan to rescue Ahmed and his family, despite bureaucratic obstacles and personal risk. The film explores themes of honor, duty, friendship, and personal responsibility against the backdrop of military conflict.
