The 1960 American drama film, based on Tennessee Williams' play "Orpheus Descending," tells the story of Valentine "Snakeskin" Xavier (Marlon Brando), a guitar-playing drifter who, after legal troubles in New Orleans, decides to start anew in a small Southern town. There, he finds work in a store managed by Lady Torrance (Anna Magnani), a woman with a troubled past whose husband, Jabe Torrance (Victor Jory), is gravely ill and bedridden. Lady, disheartened by her unhappy marriage and haunted by the tragic death of her father, finds solace in her relationship with Valentine, leading to a romantic involvement. However, their affair draws condemnation and hostility from the townspeople, particularly from Sheriff Jordan Talbott (R.G. Armstrong), who warns Valentine to leave town. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Carol Cutrere (Joanne Woodward), a local outcast with a scandalous reputation, who also shows interest in Valentine. The film delves into themes of loneliness, prejudice, and the quest for freedom, illustrating how societal constraints and personal demons lead to tragic outcomes. Although set in the American South, the film was shot in Milton, New York. It received critical acclaim and was recognized at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where Sidney Lumet won the Silver Seashell for Best Director, and Joanne Woodward received the Zulueta Prize for Best Actress.
