The 2009 British-Canadian-French fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam tells the story of Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), an immortal mystic leading a traveling theater troupe that offers audiences the chance to enter a magical mirror into their own imaginations, confronting choices between self-discovery and illusion. Centuries ago, Parnassus made a deal with the Devil, Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), trading immortality for the opportunity to have a daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole). As Valentina approaches her 16th birthday, Mr. Nick comes to claim her soul, but Parnassus proposes a new wager: whoever collects five souls first will win Valentina. Meanwhile, the troupe rescues a mysterious amnesiac named Tony (Heath Ledger), who becomes instrumental in gathering souls, though his true identity raises suspicions from Anton (Andrew Garfield), who harbors feelings for Valentina. Following Heath Ledger's untimely death, the role of Tony was completed by Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, justified within the narrative by the character's changing appearance upon entering the Imaginarium. The film is noted for its visual inventiveness, philosophical depth, and Gilliam's distinctive style.
