The Light Between Oceans

The 2016 romantic drama, directed by Derek Cianfrance and based on M. L. Stedman's novel, tells the story of Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a World War I veteran who becomes a lighthouse keeper on the remote Janus Rock off the coast of Australia. He marries Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), and they start a life together on the isolated island. After two miscarriages and a stillbirth, Isabel is devastated. One day, a rowboat washes ashore carrying a dead man and a living infant girl. Isabel persuades Tom not to report the incident and to raise the child, whom they name Lucy, as their own. Years later, during a trip to the mainland, Tom learns about Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz), a woman who lost her husband and daughter at sea on the same day they found Lucy. Tormented by guilt, Tom anonymously informs Hannah that her daughter is alive and loved. He later sends her Lucy's rattle, leading to the revelation of their secret. Tom is arrested, and Lucy is returned to Hannah, but the child rejects her new family. Initially, Isabel blames Tom but eventually acknowledges her role, and the couple receives a suspended sentence. Years later, adult Lucy Grace visits Tom to thank him for the love and care he provided during her early years. The film received mixed reviews, with critics praising the performances and visuals but criticizing its slow pacing.​
