Henry's Crime

A 2010 American romantic comedy with elements of crime, directed by Malcolm Venville. The film tells the story of Henry Torne (Keanu Reeves), a modest and unambitious toll collector in Buffalo, New York, leading a monotonous and purposeless life. His wife, Debbie (Judy Greer), is dissatisfied with this situation. One day, Henry's friend, Eddie (Fisher Stevens), invites him to play baseball but stops by the Buffalo Savings Bank on the way, where, along with two accomplices, he commits a robbery, leaving Henry as the driver. Henry is arrested as an accomplice, and unwilling to betray the real criminals, he takes the blame and receives a prison sentence. In prison, his cellmate is Max Saltzman (James Caan), a charming conman who has grown accustomed to life behind bars and finds a peculiar peace in it. Max inspires Henry to find a purpose in life, asserting that to do so, one must have a dream. Meanwhile, Debbie divorces Henry and marries Joe (Danny Hoch), one of the actual bank robbers. After 18 months of incarceration, Henry is released and decides to commit the very bank robbery for which he has already served time. He discovers an old bootlegger's tunnel leading from a neighboring theater directly into the bank's vault. To gain access to the theater, Henry gets a job there and lands the role of Lopakhin in a production of Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." During rehearsals, he falls in love with Julie Ivanova (Vera Farmiga), a talented and ambitious actress playing the role of Ranevskaya. Julie dreams of a Broadway career and is initially skeptical of Henry, but gradually a romantic relationship develops between them. Henry convinces Max to get out of prison and help him with the heist, and Max agrees, faking illness to secure early release. Together, they devise a plan to break into the bank through the tunnel. However, the situation becomes complicated when Julie learns of Henry's intentions and questions their relationship. In the climactic moment, Henry must choose between carrying out the crime and the new life he has begun to build with Julie. The film explores themes of self-discovery, redemption, and second chances, blending elements of comedy, drama, and romance.
