The 1996 American romantic crime film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet." The setting is transposed to the fictional Verona Beach, where two powerful families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are engaged in a fierce power struggle. In this environment, Romeo Montague (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet Capulet (Claire Danes) meet by chance at a costume ball hosted by the Capulet family. They instantly fall in love, despite the ongoing feud between their families. With the assistance of Friar Laurence (Pete Postlethwaite), they secretly marry, hoping their union will end the family discord. However, a series of tragic events, including deadly duels involving Mercutio (Harold Perrineau) and Tybalt (John Leguizamo), leads to Romeo's banishment and forces Juliet to take desperate measures. She consumes a potion that simulates death to avoid marrying Paris (Paul Rudd), but the plan goes awry. Unaware of the ruse, Romeo takes poison at her side. Juliet awakens, and upon seeing Romeo dead, takes her own life. The film retains the original Shakespearean dialogue but sets the action in a contemporary environment, replacing swords with firearms and depicting Verona Beach as a modern metropolis. The soundtrack, featuring artists like Garbage, Radiohead, and The Cardigans, received acclaim and contributed to the film's popularity. "Romeo + Juliet" was well-received by critics and audiences, grossing over $151 million on a $14.5 million budget. The film garnered several awards, including the Silver Bear for Best Actor for DiCaprio at the Berlin International Film Festival, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
