The 2001 American neo-noir crime film directed by Joel and Ethan Coen follows the life of Ed Crane (Billy Bob Thornton), a quiet and detached barber living in the small town of Santa Rosa, California, in 1949. Ed leads a mundane life with his wife Doris (Frances McDormand), a bookkeeper whom he suspects is having an affair with her boss, Dave Brewster (James Gandolfini). When a stranger, Creighton Tolliver (Jon Polito), enters the barbershop and offers Ed a chance to invest $10,000 in a new dry-cleaning business, Ed decides to blackmail Dave to obtain the money. However, the plan spirals out of control: Dave discovers the blackmail and kills Tolliver, leading Ed to kill Dave in self-defense. The police arrest Doris for embezzlement and murder, and she commits suicide in jail. Ed hires attorney Freddy Riedenschneider (Tony Shalhoub), but soon finds himself under investigation and ultimately sentenced to death. Shot in black and white, the film is styled after classic noir, employing voice-over narration and drawing inspiration from the novels of James M. Cain. Roger Deakins' cinematography received critical acclaim, and the film won the Best Director award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Despite limited release and modest box office returns, the film was praised for its atmosphere, visual style, and profound exploration of themes such as alienation and existential emptiness.
