The Merchant of Venice

The 2004 British-Italian romantic drama film directed by Michael Radford is the first full-length sound adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name. Set in late 16th-century Venice, the story follows the Jewish moneylender Shylock (Al Pacino), who faces prejudice from the Christian society. Venetian merchant Antonio (Jeremy Irons) borrows 3,000 ducats from Shylock to assist his friend Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) in traveling to Belmont to court the wealthy heiress Portia (Lynn Collins). Shylock agrees to the loan without interest but stipulates that if the debt is not repaid on time, he will be entitled to a pound of Antonio's flesh. Bassanio successfully undergoes the casket test and marries Portia. Meanwhile, Antonio's ships are reported lost at sea, leaving him unable to repay the loan, allowing Shylock to demand the fulfillment of their contract. The case goes to court, where Portia, disguised as a male lawyer, defends Antonio. She points out that while the contract grants Shylock a pound of flesh, it does not permit him to shed any blood, making the condition impossible to fulfill. Consequently, Shylock loses his property and is forced to convert to Christianity. The film received positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for Al Pacino's portrayal of Shylock and the authentic depiction of Renaissance Venice. However, some critics expressed mixed feelings regarding the film's handling of the play's antisemitic themes. With a budget of $30 million, the film grossed approximately $21.4 million worldwide.
