A 1971 American drama directed by Jerry Schatzberg. The film focuses on the lives of a group of heroin addicts who congregate in "Needle Park" (the nickname for Sherman Square on Manhattan's Upper West Side). Two people hold the center of the film. Bobby, played by Al Pacino, is young, hooked, and hustling for small money; Helen, played by Kitty Winn, is restless and taken with his charisma. Initially, Helen does not use drugs, but under Bobby's influence, she becomes addicted to heroin. As their addictions deepen, their lives spiral downward, leading to a series of betrayals and personal tragedies. The film is noted for its raw and unflinching portrayal of drug addiction, which sparked discussions and controversies upon its release. This was Al Pacino's first leading role in a film, attracting the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola and leading to his subsequent casting in "The Godfather." Kitty Winn's portrayal of Helen earned her the Best Actress award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.
