The 2013 American dystopian thriller horror film “The Purge” was written and directed by James DeMonaco. Set in the near future in the United States, the story unfolds in a society governed by the totalitarian regime known as the New Founding Fathers of America, which has established a chilling annual event called “The Purge.” During this 12-hour period, all crimes, including murder, are legalized, and emergency services are suspended, supposedly to reduce crime rates and unemployment by letting citizens vent their aggression. The narrative centers around the Sandin family, who live in a wealthy suburban neighborhood. James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), the family patriarch, is a successful salesman of high-tech security systems specifically designed for Purge Night. He lives with his wife Mary (Lena Headey), teenage daughter Zoey (Adelaide Kane), and young son Charlie (Max Burkholder). As they prepare to lock down their fortified home for the annual event, chaos ensues when Charlie, moved by compassion, allows a wounded stranger (Edwin Hodge) to enter the house. This act of kindness attracts the attention of a group of masked, well-dressed, and violent young purgers who demand the stranger be handed over. Faced with this life-threatening ultimatum, the Sandins must confront their own beliefs and the brutal realities of the world they inhabit. As tensions rise and violence erupts both outside and inside the house, the family’s unity and morality are tested to the limit. The film explores profound themes such as class inequality, sanctioned violence, moral choices, and the thin veneer of civilization under extreme pressure.
