The 1997 American legal drama film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on John Grisham's novel, follows Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon), a recent law school graduate from Memphis State University who, lacking job prospects, joins a dubious law firm owned by Lyman "Bruiser" Stone (Mickey Rourke). Teaming up with Deck Shifflet (Danny DeVito), a paralegal who has failed the bar exam multiple times, Rudy takes on the case of the Black family, whose son Donny Ray (Johnny Whitworth) is dying of leukemia due to the refusal of their insurance company, Great Benefit, to cover a necessary bone marrow transplant. Facing off against seasoned attorney Leo Drummond (Jon Voight) and systemic corruption, Rudy, with the support of Judge Tyrone Kipler (Danny Glover), fights for justice. Concurrently, he develops a romantic relationship with Kelly Riker (Claire Danes), a victim of domestic abuse. The film delves into themes of morality, justice, and the individual's struggle against powerful institutions. Despite critical acclaim and nominations for major awards, the film underperformed commercially, grossing $45.9 million against a $40 million budget.
