Bram Stoker's Dracula

A 1992 American Gothic horror film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. The story begins in 1462, with Prince Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) returning from war to find his wife, Elisabeta (Winona Ryder), has committed suicide, believing him dead. In despair and fury, Dracula renounces God and becomes a vampire. Centuries later, in 1897, young solicitor Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) travels to Transylvania to assist Count Dracula in purchasing London properties. Dracula notices a photograph of Jonathan's fiancée, Mina Murray (Winona Ryder), who bears a striking resemblance to his deceased wife. Obsessed with reuniting with his lost love, Dracula travels to London, leaving Jonathan imprisoned by his vampire brides. In London, Dracula seduces and turns Mina's friend, Lucy Westenra (Sadie Frost), into a vampire. Dr. Jack Seward (Richard E. Grant), concerned by Lucy's strange behavior, enlists the help of Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins), who identifies vampirism as the cause. Despite efforts by Van Helsing and Lucy's fiancé, Lord Arthur Holmwood (Cary Elwes), Lucy dies and becomes a vampire, leading to her destruction by a stake through the heart. Meanwhile, Mina, worried about Jonathan's absence, travels to Transylvania, finds him in a monastery, and marries him. Back in London, Mina becomes increasingly drawn to Dracula, who seduces her and compels her to drink his blood, binding them eternally. However, realizing he has doomed Mina to eternal damnation, Dracula feels remorse. Jonathan, Van Helsing, and their allies pursue Dracula back to his castle in Transylvania. In the climactic battle, Dracula is mortally wounded, and Mina, understanding his suffering and love, releases him from immortality by driving a knife through his heart and decapitating him. The film concludes with their tragic love and redemption.
