A 2008 American-German romantic drama film directed by Stephen Daldry, based on the novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. The story begins in post-war Germany, where 15-year-old Michael Berg (David Kross) falls ill and is helped by Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet), an older woman. They embark on a passionate affair, during which Hanna asks Michael to read literary works to her aloud. Suddenly, Hanna disappears, leaving Michael devastated. Years later, as a law student, Michael attends a war crimes trial and discovers that Hanna is accused of war crimes as a former concentration camp guard. She is illiterate but hides it, taking on more responsibility than she deserves. Michael realizes that her shame over illiteracy influences her decisions. The film explores complex themes of guilt, shame, and moral responsibility, showing how personal secrets can affect lives and relationships.
