The 1998 American fantasy melodrama directed by Vincent Ward, based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, tells the story of Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams), a pediatrician who meets his future wife, artist Annie Collins (Annabella Sciorra), while vacationing in Switzerland. They marry and create a happy family with two children, Ian and Marie. However, their life is overshadowed by tragedy when the children die in a car accident. Annie falls into a deep depression, and Chris tries to support her despite his own grief. Four years later, Chris himself dies in an accident and finds himself in the afterlife, which takes the form of a picturesque landscape reminiscent of Annie's paintings. His guide is Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who explains the nature of his new existence. Chris discovers that he can create and alter the surrounding world with his thoughts. He meets Leona (Rosalind Chao), who turns out to be the embodiment of his daughter Marie. Meanwhile, Annie, unable to bear the loss, commits suicide and ends up in hell, as suicides in this world are doomed to eternal suffering. Chris, learning of this, decides to save her. Together with Albert and the Tracker (Max von Sydow), he embarks on a perilous journey through various layers of the afterlife. In hell, Chris finds Annie immersed in a state of eternal despair and guilt. He tries to reach her by sharing her suffering and expressing his unconditional love. Gradually, Annie begins to recognize his presence, and their mutual love allows them to reunite. In the finale, they decide to reincarnate to meet again in a new life. The film explores themes of love, loss, the afterlife, and the power of the human spirit, offering viewers a visually rich and emotionally charged journey.
