Where the Crawdads Sing

A 2022 American mystery drama film directed by Olivia Newman, with a screenplay by Lucy Alibar, based on the novel of the same name by Delia Owens. Set in the 1950s–1960s in the marshlands of North Carolina, the film follows Catherine "Kya" Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who grows up in isolation in the swamps after her family abandons her in childhood. Kya becomes the subject of gossip and suspicion among the residents of the nearby town of Barkley Cove. She forms a close bond with Tate Walker (Taylor John Smith), who teaches her to read and write, and they fall in love. However, Tate leaves for college and does not return, leaving Kya heartbroken. Later, she enters into a relationship with Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson), a popular young man from town who promises to marry her but deceives her. When Chase is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect in his murder. Attorney Milton (David Strathairn) takes on her defense. The film explores themes of loneliness, betrayal, and resilience, depicting how Kya overcomes adversity and finds her place in the world.
