A hybrid space simulator and strategy game, X-COM: Interceptor is the fourth installment in the X-COM series, developed and published by MicroProse. Unlike its predecessors, the game takes place in the year 2067 and shifts the focus to managing X-COM’s space forces as they defend humanity from an alien threat in deep space. The gameplay blends strategic resource management, base building, technology research, and diplomatic interactions with corporations, along with intense space combat where players directly pilot starfighters against alien forces. Battles take place in a fully 3D space environment, requiring tactical thinking and quick reflexes. The economic system revolves around trade and resource extraction to maintain and upgrade the fleet. Despite its innovative concept, the game received mixed reviews due to its steep learning curve and departure from the series’ traditional tactical gameplay, but it remains an interesting experiment that combines strategy with space combat.
