The 1989 drama film directed by Euzhan Palcy, based on André Brink's novel of the same name, addresses the theme of apartheid in South Africa. The protagonist, Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland), is a white South African schoolteacher who is initially apolitical and trusts the authorities. His life changes when the son of his black gardener, Gordon Ngubene (Winston Ntshona), dies after participating in a peaceful demonstration, and Gordon himself disappears following his arrest. Shocked by the system's indifference and brutality, Ben initiates his own investigation, confronting police corruption and violence, particularly from Captain Stolz (Jürgen Prochnow). Seeking justice, he turns to human rights lawyer Ian McKenzie (Marlon Brando), who agrees to represent the case in court. However, the trial becomes a sham, leading Ben to take matters into his own hands by assisting black activists, including his driver Stanley Makhaya (Zakes Mokae), in gathering evidence of human rights violations. His actions result in family turmoil: his wife Susan (Janet Suzman) and daughter Suzette (Susannah Harker) turn away from him, while his son Johan (Rowen Elmes) supports him. Ultimately, Ben becomes a target for the authorities and is killed by Captain Stolz's car, after which Stanley avenges him by killing Stolz. The film received critical acclaim for its profound exploration of apartheid and strong performances, particularly Marlon Brando, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
