The 1997 American political action thriller directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by Andrew W. Marlowe centers on the hijacking of the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, by Russian terrorists led by Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman). They demand the release of Kazakh dictator Ivan Radek (Jürgen Prochnow). U.S. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford), a Vietnam War veteran, hides on board and fights to rescue his family and crew. Vice President Kathryn Bennett (Glenn Close) manages the crisis from Washington, D.C. The film received positive reviews and was a commercial success, grossing $315.2 million worldwide against an $85 million budget. It earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.
