Amateur Radio (Ham Radio)

This is a technical and communication practice that involves establishing radio contact between operators using specialized radio stations outside of professional or commercial activities. It originated in the late 19th century due to the work of Russian physicist Alexander Popov, who in 1895 demonstrated the world’s first radio receiver and is considered one of the inventors of radio. Initially, amateur enthusiasts built their own transmitters and antennas, experimenting with frequency bands, signal transmission methods, and communication techniques. During the 20th century, amateur radio spread globally, with communities of hobbyists forming to study the theoretical and practical aspects of radio communication and provide assistance during emergencies. Amateur radio operators have significantly contributed to the development of wireless technology and data transmission systems. The practice requires licensing, the use of official call signs, and compliance with international protocols and standards. There are numerous contests in which participants aim to make as many radio contacts as possible in a limited time using various modulation methods, including SSB, CW, and digital modes like FT8. Amateur radio also includes direction finding, satellite communication, homemade equipment and antennas, and participation in global monitoring networks. This practice encourages technical thinking, engineering skills, and international collaboration, and it is actively used in educational initiatives and scientific experiments. Leading organizations include the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Union of Radio Amateurs of Russia (SRR), and other national societies.
