CNC Modeling

Is a technical and creative practice of developing digital three-dimensional models intended for subsequent processing by computer numerical control (CNC) machines such as milling machines, lathes, and laser cutters. It emerged in the mid-20th century alongside the development of automation and early industrial CNC systems, and gained wide application in both industry and creative fields with the advent of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) in the 1980s and 1990s. CNC modeling requires an understanding of materials, mechanical properties, tool behavior, and machining techniques. The core of the process involves creating an accurate 3D model in specialized software (such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Rhino, ArtCAM), followed by generating a toolpath and G-code using CAM software. This practice is used in engineering, architecture, design, jewelry, sculpture, furniture making, and prototyping. Its key feature is high precision and reproducibility, making it essential for both mass production and custom work. Artists and makers also utilize CNC machines to produce complex forms that are impossible to create manually, pushing the boundaries of traditional crafts and art. Modern trends include integration with generative design, algorithmic modeling, and sustainable manufacturing.
