The 2017 American crime action-comedy film directed by Doug Liman is based on the real-life story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who, in the late 1970s, was recruited by the CIA to conduct covert reconnaissance missions in Central America. Soon, he becomes involved with the Colombian Medellín Cartel, including Pablo Escobar, smuggling drugs into the United States. To avoid prison, Seal turns informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) while continuing to participate in illicit operations, including arms deliveries to the Nicaraguan Contras. His activities lead to one of the largest covert operations in U.S. history, nearly causing a political scandal during the Reagan administration.
