A 1990 American biographical drama film directed by Penny Marshall and written by Steven Zaillian, based on the 1973 memoir by neurologist Oliver Sacks. Set in 1969 at a psychiatric hospital in the Bronx, the story follows Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams), a shy and dedicated neurologist who discovers that the experimental drug L-DOPA can awaken patients who have been catatonic since the 1920s due to an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. One such patient is Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who, after decades of immobility, regains the ability to move and interact with the world. The film delves deeply into the emotional and psychological challenges of returning to life, as Leonard struggles to adapt to the modern world and confronts the fleeting nature of his awakened state. Dr. Sayer, in turn, forms profound connections with his patients and undergoes personal growth, learning to appreciate the value of life's moments. The supporting cast includes Julie Kavner (Eleanor Costello), John Heard (Dr. Kaufman), Penelope Ann Miller (Paula), Max von Sydow (Dr. Peter Ingham), and Ruth Nelson (Leonard's mother). "Awakenings" was critically acclaimed for its poignant storytelling and outstanding performances, particularly by De Niro and Williams. The film received three Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (De Niro), and Best Adapted Screenplay. With a budget of $29 million, it grossed approximately $108.7 million worldwide, achieving commercial success and leaving a lasting impact on cinema with its profound humanistic message.
