Backgammon

This is one of the oldest board games in human history, originating in Mesopotamia around 3000 BCE and remaining popular across different cultures and countries for millennia. The game involves two players who move their checkers across a board aiming to be the first to bear off all of their pieces. Played with two dice, it combines elements of chance with strategic thinking. The board is divided into four quadrants, each with six triangular points, and players move their pieces in opposite directions, often clashing during the game. Historically, backgammon is referenced in Sumerian records, Persian and Roman sources, and was widely played in Byzantium and the Islamic East, where it was known as "tavla." Over time, many variations emerged, including short and long backgammon, as well as regional versions such as Turkish, Armenian, Arab, and European styles. In the Middle Ages, the game spread throughout Europe and by the 20th century took its modern form, including its standardized version known in English as backgammon. Today, backgammon serves both as a recreational activity and a competitive sport: international tournaments are held, professional leagues exist, and there is an evolving theory of optimal strategies. It remains especially popular in the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia, as well as in Israel, Turkey, Greece, and the Balkans. Despite its simple rules, the game requires players to assess risks, plan moves in advance, and apply tactics to block their opponents. Modern technology has also brought backgammon into the digital realm, with online tournaments and powerful AI engines playing at world champion level.
