Beyond the Sea

The 2004 American biographical musical drama directed by Kevin Spacey, who also stars in the lead role and uses his own singing voice for the musical numbers, portrays the life of singer and actor Bobby Darin. The film blends real events with fantasy sequences, where the adult Darin interacts with his younger self, reflecting on his past and ambition for fame. Born as Walden Robert Cassotto in the Bronx and suffering from rheumatic fever, he dreamed of becoming a great performer from childhood. His journey to success begins with the hit "Splish Splash," after which he transitions to a more mature style, performing big band songs like "Mack the Knife." In Hollywood, he stars in "Come September," where he meets actress Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth), whom he soon marries despite opposition from her mother, Mary Douvan (Greta Scacchi). Their marriage proves challenging: Sandra struggles with alcoholism, and Bobby becomes increasingly absorbed in his work. Later, he learns that his "sister" Nina (Caroline Aaron) is actually his mother, and his "mother" Polly (Brenda Blethyn) is his grandmother, which comes as a shock. In the late 1960s, Darin becomes politically active, supporting Robert Kennedy's campaign, and considers a political career of his own. However, his musical style falls out of favor, and he attempts to adapt by performing folk and protest songs, which fail to resonate with audiences. Despite this, he organizes a successful show in Las Vegas but soon dies at the age of 37 from complications following heart surgery. The film concludes with a scene where the adult and young Darin sing "As Long as I'm Singing" together, symbolizing the completion of his life's journey.
